AT Bus Escapes

For this 2-week design sprint, we were tasked to prototype an extension for Auckland Transport's mobile app that encourages children to opt for public transport instead of a private car. The target age group is around 6 years of age, and we were encouraged to draw upon our own childhood experiences to inform our design approach.

Step 1 - precedent research

Immediately, an app I used to love as a child popped up in my mind. It was called Walkr (top left image), an app that allows you to explore planets by taking walking steps. Through my precedent research, I also examined the layout, design, and colour schemes of other kid-targeted apps.I discovered that many of them employed soft-edged, flat visuals as well as app "mascots" that act as the users' friends within the app.

Mocking up potential solutions

I had many ideas for this sprint, including adding minigames, planting flowers, and multiplayer options. I explored all of these options and got feedback from my peers. Ultimately, No. 3, an exploration game, was the standout concept. While using the app on AT, the user can gain "fuel" that they can use to 'boost' to new worlds. This was my ideal choice because thinking in the mind of a child, I believe this would motivate me through a sense of thrill of curiosity and discovery.

Final product: Bus Scapes!

Bus-scapes is an AT app feature that allows you to escape reality and explore the world while you travel! Each time you ride the bus, you will get bus fuel, and you can use this to hop to new islands!
